ISO 9001:2015 US Manufacturing 25+ Years Direct Engineer Access

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Manufacturer

Evaluating an electronics manufacturer? Here are the questions experienced engineers ask — and how REC answers them.

Do you handle design and manufacturing under one roof, or is engineering outsourced?
REC: All engineering is in-house — schematic design, PCB layout, firmware development, and mobile app development. You work directly with the engineers who design your product, and they stay involved through manufacturing. No handoffs to third parties.
What's your experience with rigid-flex PCBs and complex stackups?
REC: We design and build rigid, flex, rigid-flex, and aluminum substrate boards up to 10+ layers. We manage fabrication through vetted partner board houses and perform all assembly, testing, and integration in-house. This is standard practice for high-end contract manufacturers — it lets us optimize fab sourcing while maintaining full quality control on assembly.
What conformal coating options do you offer for outdoor or harsh-environment products?
REC: We have automated conformal coating with four coating types: acrylic (AR) for general moisture protection, silicone (SR) for extreme temperature ranges (-65°C to +200°C), urethane (UR) for chemical resistance, and epoxy for maximum hardness. Processes are MIL-I-46058C and IPC-CC-830B compliant. We help you select the right coating for your environment.
Can you handle firmware and IoT connectivity, or just the hardware?
REC: We handle the full stack. Our engineering team builds multi-processor embedded firmware with cloud-connected OTA update systems, WiFi/BLE/LoRa/cellular integration, iOS and Android mobile apps, and cloud monitoring dashboards. We've deployed connected products across grill controllers, industrial monitors, and fitness equipment.
What quality certifications do you hold?
REC: We're registered to ANSI/ISO 9001:2015 and maintain Navy-certified soldering expertise. Every board gets 100% electrical testing. Our quality system covers incoming inspection, in-process verification, and final test. 100% US-based manufacturing.
What volumes do you support? Are we too small or too large?
REC: We're built for the range most startups and OEMs need: prototype runs (5-25 units) through production volumes (10,000+ units). The 500-1,000 unit range is our sweet spot — large enough for mature quality systems, small enough that your project gets direct engineering attention.
How fast can you turn around a prototype?
REC: Typical prototype assembly is 1-3 weeks depending on component availability. Production runs are 3-6 weeks standard, with expedited options available. US-based manufacturing means no international shipping delays. Direct engineer access means fast design iterations when issues come up.
Do you review designs for manufacturability before production?
REC: Every PCB quote includes a free DFM review. We check annular rings, trace spacing, solder mask dams, fiducial placement, panelization, and more. We flag issues and work with you to resolve them before fabrication — not after. This saves time and money.
Who do I actually talk to — a sales rep or an engineer?
REC: You talk to engineers. No sales team gatekeepers, no account managers relaying messages. The engineer who answers your call is the same person who designs your circuit and oversees your build. That's how a 25+ year engineering-driven shop works.

Design for Manufacturability
Free DFM review on every design, common issues flagged before fabrication

REC reviews all design files for manufacturability before production.

Common DFM considerations: Adequate annular rings (min 5 mil for vias, 7 mil for component pads), proper spacing between copper and board edge (min 10 mil), solder mask dams between close-pitch pads (min 4 mil), fiducial marks for SMT, and panelization for efficient production.

We flag any issues and work with you to resolve them before fabrication.

Every PCB quote includes a DFM review at no extra charge.
